The four surviving manuscripts of the Latin translation are kept at the Bibliothèque publique (Chartres), the Bibliothèque Mazarine (Paris), the Biblioteca Nacional (Madrid) and the Bodleian Library (Oxford). الأربع مخطوطات الناجية من الترجمة اللاتينية محفوظة في المكتبة العامة (في شارتر)، ومكتبة مازارين (في باريس)، بمكتبة ناسيونال (في مدريد) ومكتبة بودليايان (في أوكسفورد).
Edward Nicholson (1849–1912), head of the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, argued in Rights of an Animal (1879) that animals have the same natural right to life and liberty that human beings do, disregarding Descartes' mechanistic view—or what he called the "Neo-Cartesian snake"—that they lack consciousness. وقد ذكر ادوارد نيكولسون، مدير مكتبة بودلين في جامعة اكسفورد، في كتابه حقوق الحيوان (1879م) أن للحيوانات نفس الحق الطبيعي الذي يتمتع به الإنسان للحياة والحرية، معترضاً على نظرية ديكارتس الآلية أو ما أسماه بـ "الثعبان الديكارتي" التي تدعي افتقار الحيوانات للوعي والإدراك.
